Q

advantages of a LAN

A
  • resources + files can be shared
  • users can log into any workstation in the LAN
  • peripherals (eg. printer) are shared

6
Q

disadvantages of LAN

A
  • expensive
  • network failure (if there is a problem in the central file server no one will be able to access their files)
  • needs security to prevent malware + viruses

7
Q

advantages of WAN

A
  • allows geographically apart workers in a company to connect
  • allows data to be shared between different LANs

8
Q

disadvantages of WAN

A
  • network failure (not all parts of network owned by organisation so has to be fixed by external supplier)
  • cost

11
Q

what affects network performance

A
  • bandwidth (how much data transmitted within a given time)
  • number of users in network (more users = slower)
  • transmission media used (ethernet cables are a direct link so faster than wifi)
  • error rate (number of errors during transmission of data - can happen due to weak signal/interferences)
  • latency (time for a packet of data to travel across network)

13
Q

how does client server network work

A
  1. user logs in to computer with username and password
  2. each computer is connected to central server
  3. so user can now access central server
  4. user can request files, printing, email and internet
    - because resources stored in central server accessed by all computers rather than stored on each individual computer

15
Q

different types of servers

A
  • file server
  • printing server
  • email server
  • login/authentication server
  • all are connected to computers by central hub/switch

16
Q

advantages of client server network

A
  • backups can be made centrally from file server rather than having to do it at each individual computer
  • software updates installed centrally from server and all devices connected will be updated
17
Q

disadvantages of client server network

A
  • if central server unavailable, no one on network can access the files/print
18
Q

how does peer to peer network work

A

files stored on hard disk of each individual computer and doesnt need username or password to access

19
Q

advantages of peer to peer network

A
  • cheaper to set up
  • if one peer switched off others can still use it
20
Q

disadvantages of peer to peer network

A
  • updates/installs need to be made in each computer which is time consuming
  • less secure as password only needed for protected files
21
Q

where are client server networks usually found

A
  • in big companies or schools
22
Q

where are peer to peer networks found

A

in homes

23
Q

what is NIC

A
  • hardware device to connect computers to a network
  • ensures all devices are following network protocols (set of rules)
  • has a MAC to identify every device in the network
24
Q

Hub VS switch

A
  • both connect nodes together to form a network
-when hub receives data it is forwarded to every device connected even if it was only meant for one
  • switches know where devices are so that doesn’t happen
  • switches have less frequent data collisions than hubs
25
Q

what is router

A

connects devices to the internet + transfers data from one network to another

26
Q

what is WAP

A

wireless access point connects wifi devices to a wired network

27
Q

what is DNS

A

converts web address to its IP address so the website can be used

28
Q

what is local hosting

A

hosting website on your own computer

29
Q

what is external hosting

A

paying a hosting company to host your website on their server
