13045 P-605 Joint Sealing Flashcards
Questions
Answers
In addition to joint sealing, what other scope of work is included in P-605?
A: Routing and sealing pavement cracks
Name 4 requirements of the preformed backer rod?
A: 1) recommended and approved by the sealant manufacturer, 2) achieve the desired shape factor, 3) support the sealant against indentation and sag, 4) shall be a non-moisture absorbing resilient material.
What is required to be submitted for the joint sealant?
A: Samples of the material and copies of the sealant manufacturer’s recommendations for mixing and installation.
What 6 things should be labeled on the sealant container?
A: 1) Name of material, 2) manufacturer’s name, 3) manufacturer’s lot number, 4) shelf life, 5) mixing instructions, 6) storage instructions
What are the requirements/restrictions associated with joint sealing time of application?
A: shall be sealed immediately following the curing period or as soon thereafter as weather conditions permit, and before the pavement is opened to traffic, including construction traffic.
What temperature is required for joint sealing?
A: pavement temp must be above 50 F and the weather shall not be rainy or foggy.
How long does it take for joint sealant to cure so it is tack free?
A: about one hour at 75 F and 50% relative humidity, and 2-3 hours at 40 F.
What are the requirements for air compressors associated with sealing equipment?
A: Must produce air with a pressure greater than 90 psi
Name the 8 steps required in prepping the joints for sealant.
A: 1) Final sawcutting, 2) beveling, 3) water blasting, 4) blown out with compressed air, 5) just prior to sealing, sand blasting with one pass on each joint face, 6) blown out with compressed air, 7) primer, 8) placement of the backer rod and sealant
To what dimensions are cracks required to be routed out to?
A: minimum sealant reservoir of 3/8” wide with a min depth of 3/8” and should be routed to just lower than the crack itself.
Do the specifications allow sealant to be on the surface of the pavement?
A: No, they do not.
What are the 3 different depth for the concave surface of the sealant?
A: 1/4” below for the roadways, 3/8” below for aprons and taxiways, 1/2” below for runways.
How thick should the joint sealant be?
A: 3/8” thick.
When should tooling be completed on the sealant?
A: Before a skin forms on the surface, usually within 10 mins
How should the sealant be tooled?
A: In both directions
Describe the requirements of the manufacturer’s representative for sealing.
A: conduct the demonstration, train contractor’s personnel, ensure the installation procedures are in accordance with directions at start of sealing, visit site 4 times during the course of sealing, and after sealing is complete, is to conduct an inspection of the work and perform inspections or testing with a report outlining the finding to be submitted at the end.
What is required to be completed prior to starting production sealing?
A: A test section per crew
What are the coring requirements on the joint sealant?
A: a core every 100 ft at expansion joints and longitudinal and transverse joints
What if the test results for joint sealant come back positive?
A: The engineer may reduce the number of cores at their discretion.
What size should test cores for sealing be?
A: 1-1/2” for transverse and longitudinal, 2-1/2” to 5” core to the depth of 2” below the backer rod for expansion
When should test cores be taken?
A: 14 to 28 days after the seal has cured
How shall the sealant core holes be patched?
A: A short section of backer rod shall be coiled in the hole prior to sealant placement.
What type of warranty is required for the sealant?
A: 5 year warranty for all defects in materials and workmanship by both the contractor and the sealant manufacturer
