What are the Lincoln-Douglass Debates (LD)?
Debates named for the 7 debates that took place between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglass in 1858.
LD debates are persuasive and rhetorical (they appeal to the emotions and ethics of the judge).
What are cross-examination debates (CX)?
They’re about policy.
The purpose of the resolution is to present a topic that requires change or action.
Affirmative side shows why it’s needed and negative side shows why it’s not needed.
Definition of forensic:
The official name for the act or study of formal debate.
Definition of resolution in debate:
The topic that will be debated (written in a form of statement).
What is a constructive speech?
An informative speech where the key points of debate are presented and positions are established.
What is rebuttal speech?
A type of persuasive speech where you point out the areas of strength in your speech, and the weaknesses in your opponent’s to the judge.
What is spreading in debate?
It requires a debater to speak rapidly while still being understood by the judge and opponents.
What is a public forum debate?
It’s purpose is to promote an audience and media-centered debate.
What are some responsibilities in debate?
- Know the rules before competing in a debate
- Know the time limits
- The rules and time limit should play a key part in planning and practice sessions
What are cross-examination periods?
Periods in debate that allow debaters to ask questions to clarify arguments and position themselves to make stronger arguments later (talk to opponent).
What is the National Forensic League?
It provides opportunities for young people to enjoy forensic activities.
Promotes the value of service, leadership, humility, integrity, and respect.
It honors students achievements with awards, and more.
What is student congress?
A more relaxed style of debate.
It offers a realistic view of the actual legislative process.
(students create legislative bills and resolutions, debate them, and then vote to adopt or reject them; it can be structured like a house and senate, or as a unicameral legislature with all representatives in one house)
It continues to grow in popularity.
