1.3) Non-Random Sampling Flashcards
Quota Definition
A fixed share/number of something
Quota Sampling (What & How?)
What?
(Like Strat) Divide population into groups according to characteristic of interest
Determine size of each group in sample to reflect proportions within population
But instead of random sampling, people are chosen via suitable means (e.g ads) until the quota for each group is filled
Quota Sampling (Pros)
-Allows small sample to be rep of the population
-No sampling frame required
-Quick, easy & inexpensive
-Allows for easy comparison between diff groups in population
Quota Sampling (Cons)
-Non-random sampling can introduce bias
-Pop must be divided into groups, which can be £ and inaccurate
-Increasing scope of study increased no of groups (More Time/£)
-Non-responses are not recorded
Opportunity/Convenience Sampling (What & How?)
What?
Where sample is taken from people available at the time of the study (who meet criteria)
E.g Exit polls at polling stations
How?
Interviewer selects the actual sampling units according to the set criteria
Opportunity/Convenience Sampling (Pros)
-Easy to carry out
-Not £
Opportunity/Convenience Sampling (Cons)
-Unlikely to be representative sample
-Highly dependent on individual researcher
