Autonomous Nervous System
responsible for subconscious control of bodily functions
Sympathetic - emotional arousal = fight or flight response
Parasympathetic - homeostasis restoration - emotional and physiological internal balance

not just how positive or negative (VALANCE) but how much. arousal corresponds to how much physiology occurs.
ecstatic = more arousal = feel more compared to feeling pleasant.
when measuring emotion - valance and arousal are separate dimensions = variety of techniques used
approach - avoidance conflict
occurs when a goal has both positive and negative aspects = approach and avoidance reactions at the same time
