13. Intro to Metabolism Flashcards
Define metabolism.
All the chemical reactions in the body.
Uses energy.
Define anabolism.
Synthesis of new larger molecules from smaller precursors.
Uses energy.
Define catabolism.
Break down of larger molecules into smaller ones.
Releases energy.
What can AMP be used as a marker of?
Low energy state
Erythrocytes only carry out anaerobic metabolism.
True or False?
TRUE
no mitochondria
How do adipocytes respond to high levels of glucose?
Store it as triglycerides.
Broken down to fatty acids + glycerol when glucose levels fall.
Fatty acids are the main energy source of cardiac muscle.
True or False?
TRUE
Outline the difference in energy consumption between skeletal muscle type 1, 2a, 2b.
Type 1: Highly aerobic, fatty acids are main energy source.
Type 2a: Tries to be aerobic as much as possible, phosphocreatine + glycogen are sources of energy, fatty acids are main source at low exercise levels.
Type 2b: Anaerobic, phosphocreatine + glucose (from glycogen store), ‘fast-twitch’ muscle
