1.3 - Greenhouse Gases Flashcards
What is the greenhouse effect?
A natural process that involves warming the lower atmosphere of the earth
Without this, the average surface temperature would be too low to sustain life
What is the radiation does the sun emit?
UV (ultra violet) and IR (infrared)
What gases absorb IR radiation?
CO2 and H2O
These are known as greenhouse gases
Common greenhouse gases
Carbon dioxide
Methane
Synthetic halocarbons
Nitrogen oxides
What is the enhanced greenhouse effect?
Increased concentration of greenhouse gases
What are the effects of the enhanced greenhouse effect?
Leads to an imbalance in the natural process, more IR radiation is absorbed by the atmosphere and therefore earths surface temperature increases
Environment concerns for the enhanced greenhouse effect
Polar icecaps melting
Warming of the oceans, causes sea levels to rise
Changes in rainfall patterns
Increase intensity and frequency of extreme weather events
Retreating glaciers
Food production disrupted
