(13) Gases in the atmosphere Flashcards
How does magnesium burn in air?
It burns in a bright white flame.
How does sulfur burn in air?
It burns in a blue flame. It produces a poisonous, colourless gas
How does hydrogen burn in air?
It burns with a pale blue flame.
What is the test for hydrogen?
Collect some gas in a test tube. Hold a lighted splint near the mouth of the test tube. If hydrogen is present, the flame will go out with a pop.
What ions do metal oxides have?
O2- ions
How do they react with acids?
They react with them to form salts.
Are they soluble in water?
No
What compounds are non-metal oxides?
Covalent compounds?
How do they react with alkalis?
They react with them to form salts.
Are they soluble in water?
Yes
What do metal carbonates give when you heat them?
The metal oxide and carbon dioxide.
What is carbon dioxide?
A greenhouse gas.
What is the greenhouse effect?
This occurs when UV light from the sun heats up the Earth.
Why has the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased?
Due to the industrial revolution and the burning of fossil fuels.
What could be the effect of an increasing global temperature?
- Polar ice caps could melt.
- Sea levels could rise.
- There could be more extreme weather.
