(11) The alkali metals Flashcards
What are the elements in group 1 called?
The alkali metals
What are the properties of group one metals?
1) Their densities increase down the group.
2) Their melting points decrease down the group.
3) They are very soft.
4) They are extremely reactive and their reactivity increases down the group.
How are group 1 metals stored?
Under oil (except for rubidium and cesium, they should be stored un sealed glass tubes.
How do group one metals react with water?
Metal + Water = Metal hydroxide + Hydrogen
Why do group 1 metals become more reactive down the group?
As the atoms become bigger, the force of attraction between the nucleus and the outer shell electron becomes weaker thus making it easier to loose.
What are the colours of the flames of Lithium, Sodium and Potassium when they burn?
Lithium burns in a red flame
Sodium burns in a yellow flame
Potassium burns in a lilac flame
