1.3 Formulaes of Ionic Compounds Flashcards
How can we work out charges in ionic compounds?
Balance the charges of the elements we already know as they cancel each other out
What does the formula of an ionic compound show?
The ratio of ions in a compound
What do the Roman numerals mean before transition metals names?
Their charge, eg. Iron (II) sulfate means there are 2 iron ions in the compound
What are carbonate ions made of?
Carbon and oxygen
CO3 2-
What are hydroxide ions made of?
OH- ions
Why do we use brackets in formulas?
If we need to multiply these ions to write the formula
What is the formula for calcium fluoride?
CaF2
What is the formula for sodium sulfate?
Na2SO4
What is the formula for magnesium nitrate?
Mg(NO3)2
What is the formula for copper (II) chloride?
CuCl2
What is the formula for iron (III) hydroxide?
Fe(OH)3
Are ionic compounds positive, neutral or negative?
Neutral
What table helps you to find reaction formulas?
Element: Potassium / Oxygen Ion/group: K1+ / O2- Electrons: Donate 1 / accept 2 Ratio: 2 / 1 Formulae: K2O
Name the 4 complex ions
- hydroxide group
- nitrate group
- carbonate group
- sulphate group
What is the formula of the ion for the hydroxide group?
OH-
