1.3 Elements of Group 1 Flashcards

1
Q

Are Group 1 elements like other metals?

A

The Group 1 element are to the left of the stepped line. This shows that they are metal but in some ways, Group 1 elements are different to other metals. The Group 1 elements have lower melting points than all the the other metals.

Q

What are the physical properties in Group 1?

A

The melting point decreases from top to bottom of Group 1. This is also the same pattern for the boiling point.

Q

What do Group 1 elements react the most strongly with?

A

The elements in this group are very reactive. All the Group 1 elements have exciting reactions with water. The reactions make hydrogen gas. The gas moves the reacting element around on water. The reactions also make alkaline solutions so the universal indicator turns purple

Example : lithium + water = LITHIUM HYDROXIDE + HYDROGEN
