1.1 Metals and Non Metals Flashcards
In the Periodic Table, where are the metals
On the left side of the periodic table
In the Periodic Table, where are non metals
On the right side of the periodic table
How can you tell that an element is a metal? (Name at least 5 to get right)
Good conductor of electricity, good conductor of heat, shiny, high density, malleable, ductile, sonorous
How can you tell that an element is not a metal? (Name at least 5 to get right)
Poor conductor of electricity, poor conductor of heat, dull, low density, brittle, not sonorous
What does low density mean?
It means it is light for its size
What does malleable mean?
To be able to hammer something into different shapes
What does ductile mean?
To pull something into wires
What does sonorous mean?
To make a ringing sound when hit.
When are metals usually solid?
At 20 degrees
What are physical properties?
They are things you can observe and measure
Do metals and non metals have different chemical properties?
Yes. Chemical properties describe chemical reactions. Many non metals and non metals react with oxygen. These products are oxides.
At what degrees do non metal oxides become gases?
20 degrees
