Pacifism
A belief that war is the wrong way to settle differences between nations. A pacifist is opposed to war
Quakers
A religious group known as the Society of Friends. They believed that all people were equal in Gods opinion, and all people should be treated equally. They did not believe in war. Many Quakers settled in Pennsylvania.
Tax
Money that people pay to their government.
Profit
The extra money made by a business after all expenses have been met.
Puritans
A Protestant group in England and America. They wanted to purify the Church of England. They believed in strict discipline and high moral standards.
Separatists
A group of puritans who left the Church of England.
Indentured servant
A person who agreed to work for 5 to 7 years without getting paid. In return, they got a passage to the new world, food,clothing, and shelter.
Rebel
A person who uses force to oppose a government.
Slavery
A system where people are owned as property and have to work with no pay and no rights.
Export
A product made or grown in one country and shipped outside that country for sale.
Cash crop
A product grow to sell and make money, not for the farmers own use.
Dissenter
A person who disagrees with a government or religious authority.
Merchant
A person who’s business is buying and selling goods for profit.
Parliament
The lawmaking body of England. It is made up of the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
