13 Colonies Flashcards
Two successful English colonies in North America and the year they started
1607 Jamestown Colony
1620 Pilgrims
3 groups of colonies
- New England
- Middle
- Southern
Economy of the New England colonies
Land is not great because the winters are more harsh and it tends to be full of rucks, so they tended to have small farms because it doesn’t cause and produce much wealth(Überfluss)
What they did was:
To branch out of types of Economic activities
1. Fishing and looking for trade
=Ships and the sea trade became a big deal for New England
They developed economic activity which was unique based on towns and cities, manufacting products
Economy of the middle colonies
New York City became a center of trade
Traditional farmers produce a lot of the food crops that will supply all the 13 colonies
Economy of the southern colonies
Based on the idea and hope of making lots of money by growing and selling crash crops
Define the crash crops and give some examples
It’s an agriculture product that is valuable enough to be shipped overseas to Europe where it commands a high price
Classic “crash crops” are tobacco, cotton, sugar and indigo
Religion new England
Puritans were one of the extreme of the Protestant movement
-believe that God has a predestination for all human beings to be saved or nor
-a indication hat you have been chosen for salvation is that you lead a goodly life and that you are materially successful.
That is the concept of the Protestant work ethic
-ironic is that they guaranteed their own Religions freedom but they are very intolerant of any other form of belief within in society
Why did the Southern colonies need labor more than the others colonies? What did
they do to solve their labor problem? (The three different strategies.)
Labor problem:
Plantation needed lots of people working to produce these crops
1.There weren’t enough English colonists to do it all and even if they were, to pay wages would cut down the profit they made by the crops.
They needed people who work for a little or preferably no money
2. Indians to enslave but they tender to either die too quickly or else they simply ran off or escape
Solution for this problem:
3.Africans from the western part
“INTENDURED SERVITUDE”
-idea was to offer to pay the passage to North America but in ex he for this the woman or man had to work for usually 7 years
-terrible deal for the poor wretched who as indentured
-many inviduals were badly mistreated which inadequate food and living arrangements
-LARGE PROPORTION DIED BEFORE THEY FULFILLED THE TERM OF SERVICE
Even if they survived the option were limited
The religion of Pennsylvania and how this affected life in that colony.
Their service marked by a lot of emotion and ferver so much that they quaked during their workship
-were remarkable progressive in thei social beliefs
Tolerated other religions ,believe that Indians should be treated fairly and they forbid slavery within Pennsylvania
The “Catholic Colony” what was it and how was it different in treating all religions?
A
What were the two “accommodations” that Indians were tempted to make with the
English colonists during the phase where they were trying to make the best of the
situation?
- Then indians wanted to trade for metal tools with the Europeans
- They wanted to form alliances against other tribes.
What was the basic pattern of Indian relations with Europeans? Be able to describe
each step in a few words.
- Cautions acceptance
- Incidence of violence-negotiator
- “let’s make the best of it”
- All out war
What happened in King Philip’s War? Be able to say something about its significance
and how it turned out.
Karl Philips war cost more American the life in combat to the revolutionary war, the war 1892,Mexican war etc.
Fight of death. From 90 English towns, 12 destroyed and 52 attacked.
In proportion to the total population of the societies involved these casualties were greater than in any American war.
