13 - Cell Organisation Flashcards
What is differentiation and when does it occur?
The process by which cells become specialised during the development of an organism
What is a tissue?
A group of similar cells that perform a function
What tissues are present in the stomach and what do they do?
Muscular - contracts - churns food
Glandular - secretes enzymes and hormones - supplies digestive fluids
Epithelial - covers - protects outside and inside of stomach
What is an organ system?
A group of organs which work together (e.g. digestive system)
Which organs are present in the digestive system?
Salivary glands - produce juices Stomach - digests Liver - produces bile Small intestine - absorbs food molecules Large intestine - absorbs water
What does multicellular mean?
An organism with a large amount of cells carrying out a function
What is glandular tissue?
A tissue that produces substances such as enzymes and hormones
What is epithelial tissue?
A tissue that lines a part of the body
What does the muscular tissue in the stomach do?
Churn food
Which body part produces bile?
Liver
Which body part produces faeces and absorbs water?
Large intestine
What does the small intestine do?
Digest/absorb soluble food
Which tissue lines the inside and outside of the stomach?
Epithelial
Name two glands in the digestive system
Salivary glands
Pancreas
What is the purpose of an organ system?
To exchange and transport materials
