1.3-4 Requirements for life and survival Flashcards
what can the body do?
maintain its boundaries, movement, responsiveness/excitability, digestion, metabolism, excretion, reproduction, growth
contractility
muscle cell’s ability to move by shortening
responsibility/excitability
ability to sense changes in the environment and respond (most involved is the nervous system)
digestion
breakdown of food substances into simple molecules that can be absorbed and used
metabolism
all of the chemical reactions that occur within an organism (mostly regulated by hormones)
excretion
the process by which wastes are removed from the body
reproduction
the process of producing offspring at a cellular and organismal level
what are the body’s survival needs?
nutrients, oxygen, water, normal body temperature, atmospheric pressure
anabolism
energy-requiring building phase of metabolism where smaller substances are combined to become complex substances
catabolism
breakdown of complex molecules/substances into simpler ones (often releases energy)
