1.3 Flashcards
Where are electrons located?
In specific energy levels in atoms.
Bohn-Rutherford diagrams:
Used to represent the location of the electrons.
Valence electrons:
electrons located in the outermost energy level.
“Core” electrons:
All of the electrons except the outermost energy level.
What is a column called on the periodic table?
A family or group
Periodic trends:
When elements follow predictable patterns in the periodic table, going from lt to rt or top to bottom.
What atomic characteristics have predictable patterns?
Atomic radius, electronegativity, and ionization energy. (A.E.I.)
Alkali metal family:
Group 1A (1) and highly reactive - need to be stored in oil (hydrogen not included)
Alkaline earth metals family:
Group 2A (2) and not as highly reactive as alkali metals. - they don’t have to be stored in oil
Halogen family:
Group 7A (17) & are highly reactive non-metal
Noble gas family:
8A (18) Most stable & least reactive elements known.
