1.2.x Flashcards
Fascicle
Small bundle of muscle fibers (made of myofibrils)
Sarcolemma/sarcoplasmic reticulum
Sarcolemma = cell membrane of a myocyte (muscle cell)
Sarcoplasmic reticulum = endoplasmic reticulum of a myocyte
Myofibril
Thousands make up a myocyte; myofibrils are made up of sarcomeres (repeating units) and include thick/thin filaments (ie, myosin, tropomyosin, actin)
Epimysium
Connective tissue surrounding entire muscle
Endomysium
Connective tissue surrounding singular muscle fiber
Perimysium
Connective tissue surrounding fascicle
Muscle rules
1) At least 2 attachments
2) Crosses at least 1 joint
3) Only get shorter (contract)
4) Insertion = attachment that moves; origin = attachment that is stationary
5) Muscle that decreases angle = flexor; muscle that increases angle = extensor
6) Muscles work in opposing pairs
7) Muscle striations show the direction of the pull
