127 Hours Flashcards
First line
Media res - immediately places the reader in the narrators world, engaging them suggesting they are actively involved in something perhaps navigating a difficult terrain. Also, the detached tone conveys the sense that he doesn’t have much emotion, highlighting he has not sense or nervousness and it’s just ‘another’ emphasizing how he’s done it before. Followed by description of the drop off. Mathematical terminology reveals he has a clear vision of the environment he’s in and reveals a mind that is observant and confident with the situations he’s in. The confident, technical language suggests that the narrator is quite self assured and in control making the readers feel quite calm but also expecting something to happen.
Fear shoots my hand over my head
Contrasts the first phrase when he was in control. In the new line, the shift to passive construction is evident in the phrase …… the fear is the subject and the narrator becomes almost an instrument through which the fear acts. The passive voice here indicates how the reader is no longer in control or the active participant but now is perhaps reacting instinctively to an external fear. He is forced into actions by something overpowering him. Followed by …. Showcases how lifted his choses are and there is no room for choice.
Shove yank force come one move
‘ I shove ‘ trying to gain control again suggests he’s applying physical and aggressive effort to get him out, contrasting with the first paragraph as he wasn’t putting much effort in at all. Furthermore emphasizes his determination to manipulate the situation. He clearly isn’t passively waiting for the change instead he’s actively trying to free himself. Come on move on- reveals frustration. Exclamation come on could be seen as signs of progress? Perhaps it represents how he is still trying to gain control and won’t give up. Urgent tone directed at himself or perhaps the rock suggests his growing sense of powerlessness. Ending with nothing conveys the narrators realization that despite his best efforts there no results. Failiure to regain control - showcases his hopes r let down and so r the readers.
