12.5 Regulation of Ventilation Rate Flashcards
What are the stimuli that affect ventilation rates?
mechanical
chemical
What are the chemical stimuli that affect ventilation rates?
increased PCO2
decreased blood pH
decreased PO2
What are peripheral chemoreceptors?
specialized autonomic sensory receptors located in the aorta and the carotid arteries that monitor PCO2
What are central chemoreceptors?
specialized autonomic sensory receptors located in the medullary respiratory control center that monitors PCO2 and pH of CSF
What are the mechanical stimuli that affect ventilation rates?
physical stretching of lungs
irritants
How does mechanical stretching of lungs affect ventilation rate?
stimulate stretch receptors that will inhibit further excitatory signals to the muscles that are involved in inspiration
What is bronchoconstriction?
contraction of the smooth muscles in bronchi and larger bronchioles
What affect do irritants have on ventilation rates?
cause coughing or bronchoconstriction
