12.4 ENERGY TRANSFER: CONVECTION Flashcards
When does convection occur?
When particles move freely.
Does convection occur in solids, liquids, or gases?
Liquids and gases
What is convection current?
When liquid and gas are heated up, the particles in the hotter region moves faster than the particles in the colder region. Particles move further apart and become less dense. The warmer, less dense liquid and gas rises. Cooler, denser liquid and gas moves down to take its place. This circulation is called convection current.
What causes sea breeze?
During the day, air above the ground on land are heated up faster than air above the water on sea. Hotter air expands and rises. Rising air is replaced by cooler air from above the sea. Causing a breeze to come from the sea onto land.
What causes land breeze?
During the night, the ground cools faster than the sea. Leading to the inverse of the air above the sea being warmer and rises. Cooler air from the land cycles to replace it. Causing the breeze to come from the land to the sea.
