1.2.2 Sustainable Management Of The Tropical Rainforest Flashcards
Levele of sustainability managing
International
National
Local
International level sustainable managements
Tropical Timber Agreement 2006
CITES
Debt reduction
Conservation and education by NGOs
Tropical timber agreement 2006
Restricts the trade in hardwoods taken from the tropical rainforest
What does CITES stand for?
the Convention on International Trade in Endagered Species
What do CITES do?
Blocks the illegal trade of rare/endangered animals and plants
Debt Reduction by HICs
When a HIC agrees to reduce the debt of a country in order for it to focus on sustainable management
What do Conservation and education by NGOs do?(3p)
- provide training
- promote the conservation message
- buy up threatened areas
What can governments do on a national level to protect and develop the trf? (3p)
- create reserves
- stop the abuse of the rainforest by developers
- makes suject like environmental studies a compulsory part of school part of the school curriculum
Problem with national sustainable management: (2p)
- Not many governments are willing to do anything that might slow down the rate of economic development
- Governments are unwilling to enforce and monitor laws that conserve and protect the rainforest
Types of local level sustainable management (5p)
Selective Logging
Stopping illegal logging
Agroforestry
Replanting
Ecotourism
Selective logging
Only felling tree when they are fully grown
Way to stop illegal logging
Satellites and drones can help to monitor this
Agroforestry
Growing crops in cleared area within the rainforest
Replanting
Growing seeds from primary forest in nurseries and then planting them back in deforested areas
Ecotourism aims
It aims to educate visitors and minimise the consumption of non-renewable resources
Example of debt reduction by HICs
- The USA agreed to debt forgiveness with Columbia of $10 million over 12 years to protect their section of the rainforest
Example of conservation and education by NGOs
- WWF started a partnership to establish and manage parks in Brazil and WWF have donated $500,000 towards this cause
- Created 21 million hectares of new protected areas in the Amazon over 2 years (2004-2006)
- This has more than doubled the areas of protection before the programmes initiation
Example of national level sustainable management (IBAMA)
- IBAMA
- Armed personnel try to catch those responsible for deforestation by using GIS maps made by scientists since 1978
- In 2015, the person considered to he the Amazon’s largest deforestation was caught and deforestation subsequently dropped by 65%
Example of Ecotourism
-Yachana lodge( hotel) in Ecuador
- It is set in 1200 hectares of protected rainforest
- They educate tourists on the environment and 100% profit goes to their education projects in the local area to improve poverty
