1.2.1 Ecosystems Flashcards
Ecosystems
A natural system made up of plants, animals and the environment
Local ecosystem
Small scale ecosystem (known as a habitat)
Eg. Pond or woodland
Regional ecosystem
Medium scale
Eg.moorland area
Global ecosystem/biome
Large scale
Eg. Tropical rainforest
Biotic
Living components of an ecosystem
Abiotic
Non-living components of an ecosystem
Food chain
Direct links between producers and consumers
Decomposer
Organisms like bacteria that break down dead tissues
Food web
Complex connection between producers and consumers with several branches/multiple links
Biomass
Total quantity/weight of organisms in given area
Biodiversity
The variety of life in the world or a particular ecosystem
Nutrient lynching
- where organisms extract minerals necessary for growth before passing them on through the food chain
Physical linkage
Physical links between parts of the ecosystem eg. Animals eating plants
Chemical linkage
Chemical links in the ecosystem eg. Mild acids in rainwater speed up the decay of dead leaves
Primary producers
-Green plants that use photosynthesis - Take nutrients from the soil using their roots
