1.2.2 secondary storage Flashcards
why do we need secondary storage?
to permanently store data for example files so you can access them later
its used to store data and fikles when the power is turned off
to externally store data in order to transport it easily
what would happen without secondary storage?
software would need to be installed each time we use it
you wouldn’t be able to save any files and data etc
three types of secondary storage
optical
magnetic
solid state
optical
examples: blu ray, DVD ROM, CD ROM
a laser light creates marks in a pattern on the disk which are then detected and translated into a readable format
• Does not store a lot of data and is very slow
• Its portable and durable but not very reliable
• Not very expensive but not too cheap either
magnetic
examples: hard disk drive, tape drive
• It can store a lot of data, but it’s not very fast
• It’s not very portable or easy to carry around because of the lose components
• Very cheap as not many people buy it
• Not very durable or reliable
solid state
examples: USB memory stick, SD card, flash memory
• It can hold quite a lot of data but not too much
• Very fast, reliable, portable and durable however, its very expensive
what is secondary storage?
secondary storage is non volatile long term storage
