1.1.2 CPU performance Flashcards
CPU speed
The processor can be made faster in many different ways. But the most important ones are: clock speed, number of cores and cache size
clock speed
clock speed is the number of instruction fetched per second.
measured in heartz
the higher the clock speed the more instructions i can fetch per second
cache size
cache is temporary very fats storage
holds copies of frequently used instructions and data
quicker to access than RAM because its closer to the CPU
smaller than RAM
cannot be increased
The more cache size the quicker the instructions can be processed as it is closer to the CPU
number of cores
each core is an individual CPU with its own accumalator, ALU, CU and registers
takes time for all the CPUs to communcate with each other to work
therefore, increasing the number of core wont make the computer significantly faster but it will carry out instructions more efficiently
