Q

What are the guidelines for backing department vehicles?

A
  1. Department vehicles will be driven around the block rather than be backed or turned around in the street. If it is necessary to back vehicles, the utmost care will be taken. 2. Department vehicles will not be backed without adequate assistance of at least one other member of the Department. 3. When backing up, the apparatus will be watched by the officer in charge and the ambulance will be watched by the ambulance crew person who is not driving. 4. All available members will assist in guiding vehicles into quarters and in such other situations where circumstances dictate the necessity for extreme caution.

Q

What is the proper procedure used to check road transmissions?

A

To check the fluid level, start at operating temperature and the engine operating at 1000 rpm. Remove the dipstick, clean, reinsert, remove again, and check the fluid level. If the fluid level is low, add fluid to the “full” mark. Do not overfill as foaming may result, causing air bubbles in the fluid which may cause transmission failure due to improper lubrication of parts. Use only approved transmission fluid.

Q

How often are apparatus radiators checked and what is the proper procedure for filling a hot radiator with cold water?

A

The coolant level in radiators will be checked daily; however, no radiator cap will be removed when the engine is hot and there is a chance that overpressure could release coolant and cause burns. Allow the engine to cool before removing the radiator cap. Cold water will not be placed in the hot radiator of any apparatus, except slowly and with the engine running.

Q

What are the guidelines for cleaning apparatus?

A

When cleaning apparatus, water will not be applied into cabs of apparatus or vehicles with hose lines. Instead, a mop or sponge will be used. This also applies to compartments as well as floorboards, particularly where they are equipped with floor mats. 2. The underside of apparatus, including engines, chassis, springs, etc., may be steamed cleaned at an approved facility after permission has been received from AD. No steam or detergent will be used on top of engines around the carburetor, air cleaner or electrical wiring. 3. Apparatus will be thoroughly greased immediately after being steam cleaned. Any grease linings that cannot be lubricated will be reported to AD.

Q

What will happen if the discharge outlet of a positive displacement type pump is completely closed while pumping water?

A

The driving force would be stalled or something would break

26
Q

Is the centrifugal pump a positive or a non-positive displacement pump?

A

Non-positive displacement pump

27
Q

Are the veins of the impeller curved away from or toward the direction of the rotor?

A

Away from

28
Q

Is there any danger in allowing a pump to run for a long period of time without discharging water? Explain.

A

Without water being discharged the pump will overheat and expand, which will cause expansion in the rings which will ultimately cause damage to the pump due to the rings making contact and seizing.

29
Q

Are centrifugal pumps better suited for firefighting apparatus than positive displacement pumps? Explain.

A

Centrifugal pumps can take advantage of intake pressures, a fact that proves very beneficial to foreground ops. They can run without pressure relief devices without doing structural damage to the pump. The initial cost of a centrifugal pump is considerably less than other comparable pumps. All in all, centrifugal pumps possess the attributes desired and required for firefighting applications.

30
Q

Is the single stage pump equipped with a transfer valve?

A

No

31
Q

Are formulas for engine pressure used by the dept absolutely correct? Explain.

A

No. Numbers are rounded for ease of memorization and speed on the fire ground which thus reduces the accuracy, though negligible on a fire scene.

32

A

Engine Pressure
Nozzle Pressure
Friction Loss
Elevation

33
Q

How many PSI per story?

A

5 psi

34
Q

When two or more pumpers are operating in relay, how much allowance is calculated so that the receiving pumper will have a suitable intake pressure?

A

20psi

35
Q

What is the normal operating pressure for a pumper at the source of supply in a two pump operation?

A

Hydrant pressure unless more is required from the relay equation

36
Q

What is meant by maximum layout?

A

The maximum amount of hose that can be laid and still pumped under 300 PSI off of the source engine.

37
Q

When you are pumping two lines from a wye, how is the EP calculated?

A

Identical: Use only one of the NP in the formula
