1.2 The water cycle Flashcards
condensation
the conversion of a vapor or gas to a liquid.
precipitation
any liquid or frozen water that forms in the atmosphere and falls to Earth.
interception
the process of interrupting the movement of water in the chain of transportation events leading to streams
infiltration
“improved water infiltration into the soil”
surface run-off
It occurs when excess rainwater, stormwater, meltwater, or other sources, can no longer sufficiently rapidly infiltrate in the soil.
through-flow
sporadic horizontal flow of water within the soil layer
ground water flow
Some of the precipitation that falls onto the land infiltrates into the ground to become groundwater.
transpiration
the process by which plants give off water vapor through the stomata in their leaves.
evaporation
Liquid water evaporates into water vapor, condenses to form clouds, and precipitates back to earth in the form of rain and snow.
