1.2 Organizing matter Flashcards
Matter is…
anything that has a mass and occupies space
Pure Substances are
Pure substances are made up of only one kind of matter and have a unique set of properties that are different from any other type of matter
elements:
Cannot be broken down into simpler substances
Compounds:
Created when 2 or more elements combine chemically in fixed proportions
Mixtures:
Mixtures are combinations of pure substances that have not chemically combined to form a compound
What are the four types of mixtures?
Mechanical Mixtures, Solution, Suspension, Colloid
Mechanical Mixture:
If we looked at it we would be able to see the distinct substances that make it up
Solution
One substance is dissolved into another creating a substance that looks like one substance
Colloid
Cloudy mixture where the particles are so small that they cannot be easily seperated from each other.
Physical Properties of Matter:
You can observe both qualitative (things you use five senses for) and quantitative (things you measure) Properties of matter
Chemical Properties of Matter
There are 5 things to consider:
How it reacts when mixed with acid, It’s ability to burn, How it reacts with water, It’s behaviour in the air, how it reacts with heat.
