1.2: Online & Blended Learning Flashcards
What is blended learning?
teaching approach where both traditional face-to-face instructional time and online computer-mediated activities are integrated
What are the 6 blended learning models?
- Flex
- Face-to-Face
- Rotation
- Online Driver
- Self-blend
- Flipped classroom
Describe the face-to-face model
- closely resembles a traditional classroom structure.
- bulk of the learning happens in person, with online resources used for supplemental activities or targeted instruction for students who need extra help or are ahead of the curve.
Describe the self-blend model
- empowers students to take charge of their online learning alongside traditional classroom instruction
- students take the initiative
- students choose and explore online courses or resources that complement their classroom learning.
Describe the rotation model
- stations with different learning activities. Students rotate through these stations throughout the designated learning block.
- Stations can include online learning activities, teacher-led instruction, group work, or independent practice.
Describe the flex model
- often used for students who need extra support or have scheduling challenges.
- emphasizes online content delivery, allowing students to learn at their own pace and attend class for focused instruction or group activities.
Describe online driver model
- Students acquire most of the knowledge and complete the majority of their coursework online.
- class time for clarification, projects, presentations, and assessments.
Describe flipped classroom model
- delivers instructional content, such as videos or readings, online, freeing up class time for more interactive activities like lab activities, problem-solving, group work, and discussions.
Which system was pivotal for contributions to the world in other ways, especially in the electronic field?
PLATO - Don Bitzer
Innovations came out: first pixel display, touch screen overlays online forums, email, instant messaging
What was the most important thing to come out of PLATO?
Learning management system
- Milestone for teaching from the computer
What are Skinner’s key ideas that influenced the design of many teaching machines?
- Immediate knowledge:
leads to learning correct behaviour (efficient approach)
- Motivating effect:
quick feedback lessens anxiety
- move at your own pace
- follows program in small steps (programming instruction)
- Mastery learning:
complete prereq knowledge to move onto new step
- results = average student learning faster
What are the 4 main areas that play a roll in learning?
- The brain
- Environment / surrounding stimuli
- Associations
- help manage complex info - Occurs in social and cultural context
What are the 12 brain/mind natural learning principles?
- All learning engages the physiology
- Brain/mind is social
- Search for meaning is innate
- Search for meaning occurs through patterning
- Emotions are critical to patterning
- The brain/mind processes parts and wholes simultaneously
- Learning involves both focused attention and peripheral perception
- Learning is both conscious and unconscious
- Two approaches to memory:
1. rote learning (taxon memory)
2. spatial (autobiographical) memory - Learning is developmental
- Complex learning is enhanced by challenge and inhibited by threat associated with helplessness and/or fatigue
- Brain is uniquely organised
