12: Making salts- 2 Flashcards
Equation for metal oxides
metal oxide + acid = a salt + water
Equation for metal hydroxides
metal hydroxide + acid = a salt + water
Equation for carbonates
carbonate + acid = a salt + water + carbon dioxide
How do you name salts?
First part comes from name of metal in the base or carbonate
Second part comes from the acid used
Examples of named salts
Hydrochloric acid produces chlorine salts
Nitric acid produces nitrate salts
Sulfuric acid produces sulfate salts
Phosphoric acid produces phosphate salts
Formula and Ion in salt - Bases
Copper oxide- CuO- Cu2+
Sodium hydroxide- NaOH- Na+
Potassium hydroxide- KOH- K+
Ammonia solution- NH4OH- H4+
Formula and Ion in salt - Carbonates
Calcium carbonate- CaCO3- Ca2+
Sodium carbonate- NaCO3- Na+
Formula and Ion in salt - Acid
Hydrochloric acid- HCl- Cl-
Nitric acid- HNO3-NO3-
Sulfuric acid- H2SO4- SO42-
Phosphoric acid- H3PO4- PO43-
Equation of reaction between Calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid
CaCO3 + 2HCl = CaCl2 + H2O + CO2
