Dionysian
The irrational barbarous part that seeks chaos, adventure and passion. Derived from Dionysius, the Greek god of wine, ecstasy and the wanton pursuit of pleasure
Apollonian
The rational civilized part of humans that desires order, tranquility and predictability. Derived from Apollo, the Greek god of many things, including prophecy, healing, and reason
Søren Aabye Kierkegaard
Generally known as the father of existentialism
Aesthetic stage
Characterized by hedonism and amorality and ultimately leads to boredom and despair
Ethical stage
Characterized by decisions based on ethical principles imposed by religion and/or society
Religious stage
Characterized by a recognition of freedom to choose a personal relationship with God and requires a leap of faith
Existence
Precedes essence; humans have to define themselves
Free will
To choose arises from an immaterial mind
Choice
Is unavoidable; not choosing is still a choice
Actions
Define who one is; inaction is still action
Responsibility
Also unavoidable, arising from having to act and make choices
Anguish
Is part of the human condition arising from distrust of one of our choices
Despair
Comes from having to make choices in situations that one cannot control
Passion
Is no excuse; one chooses how to act on feelings
Past circumstances
Or events don’t justify present choices or actions
