1.2 Functions Of The Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the respiratory functions
Provide extensive surface area for gas exchange between air and circulating blood - aveoli and blood in papillaries
Move air to and from exchange surfaces of lungs
Nonrespiratory functions
Immune functions
Protection against drying out
Protection from inhaled pathogens and irritating substances - filtering of foreign substances
Respiratory system is lined with
Mucous membranes that contain mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue it secretes : sceretory , collectins and defensins
Filtering of foreign material : mechanism - mucus secretion traps foreign particles : contains antibodies , ciliated epithelium beats upwards towards pharynx , saline solution : enables mucus escalator function properly
Non respiratory functions all
Immune functions Participates in olfactory senses Metabolic role Homeostatic regulation of blood Egulation of blood pressure Produce sounds Blood reservoir Temperature control
What is a restrcitive lung disease and give an example
When you have a difficulty expanding your lungs with air
Intersititial lung disease
What is an obstructive lung disease and give an example?
Condition found when it is hard to exhale - hampers air flow rate
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease , asthma , cystic fibrosis
Explain cystic fibrosis
Inadequate ion secretion
- Lack of saline solution
- Decrease cilia movement
- Mucus becomes thick and sticky -> trapped bacteria cannot be removed , starts to colonize
Explain bronchitis
Improper function of cillia
- Acute - virus and bacterial infections , less than 3 weeks
- Chronic - smoking paralyzes cilia , mucous builds up, chronic cough more acute infections
