1.2 - Electronic Configuration Flashcards
Where are electrons located in an atom?
electron shells
how do the number of electrons relate to an elements atomic number
there is the same amount of protons and electrons in a neutral atom
what properties does the innermost electron shell have?
the lowest energy level and can contain a maximum of 2 electrons
how do you build an electron configuration
add electrons from the inner to the outer shells until each shell is full
how many electrons can each shell hold
the first shell can hold up to two electrons, the second shell can hold up to eight (2 + 6) electrons, the third shell can hold up to 18 (2 + 6 + 10)
how many protons does sulfur have
16
what is the electron configuration for Nitrogen (N) with an atomic number of 7
2.5
what is the electron configuration of Magnesium (Mg) with an atomic number of 12
2.8.2
A neutral carbon atom has the electron configuration 2.4. What can you infer from this?
It has 2 electrons in the first shell and 4 electrons in the second shell
how many electrons does a neutral Chlorine (Cl) have
17
What are the number of electrons in each shell of a neutral lithium atom?
2 electrons in the first shell and 1 electron in the second shell
