Steps in a criminal case
Reporting a crime (999, online, police station)
Investigation
Charging a suspect, CPS decide based on tests, liaise with police
Court, pre-trial matters, admissibility of evidence, magistrates or crown
Trial, judge keeps court in order and advises jury/magistrates, jury/magistrates listen to evidence provided
Verdict, given in secret, majority/unanimous, beyond reasonable doubt
Sentencing, judge has min and max based on sentencing guidelines
Appeals
Role of police (short)

Role of courts (short)
Magistrates deal with summary offences
Crown deals with indictable and triable either way offences

Jury = evidence/arguments, verdict
Give bail and legal aid
Judge = advise jury, sentencing (hearing)
Role of CPS (short)
Advise police on investigations and lines of enquiry
Decide whether to prosecute and with what charges
Use full code test (evidential, public interest)
Prepares and presents cases in court
Role of prison and probation services (short)
Prison = supervises offenders in custody, offers education/ therapy programmes to help offenders in life after prison
Probation = supervises offenders serving community sentences or those on license to serve part of sentence outside prison
Role of government departments
Protect the public
Provide funding for the police and CPS
Bring policies into action, such as the zero tolerance policing
Police relationships
Courts - police give evidence as a prosecution witness, protect vulnerable witnesses so they’re able to give testimonies and transport offenders from prison to court
CPS - Police charge offenders in line with CPS instructions, police gather evidence against offenders for the CPS
Probation and Prison service - Police arrest anyone who has breached their license from prison, police help manage child sex offenders in area
Charities - police work alongside to determine rises in unreported crimes and community based issues
CPS relationships
Police - CPS advise the police on lines of enquiry and evidence collection, CPS advise police on what to charge suspects with
Courts - courts prepare and present a prosecution case against suspects, courts help to prepare prosecution appeals to sentences that are too lenient or not satisfactory
Gov departments relationships
Police - Police officers are governed by and report to the home secretary, police work alongside ministry of defence for matters of international security
Courts - the ministry of justice is responsible for the running of courts, prison services and probation services (tax money used to fund these)
Courts relationships
Prison service - prison service transports offenders to and from prison/court, prison service helps arrange meetings/ video link/ interviews

Police - the police co-ordinate interviews/ video links between the prison and court
Courts - courts work with prison services to facilitate legal visits with offenders, prison service carries out the custodial sentences given in court
Probation service - NPS deals with offenders who have been released from prison or are being released on license
