1.2: Chemical Equations Flashcards
What happens to the atoms in a chemical reaction?
The atoms get rearranged.
How does the mass of reactants compare with the mass of products in a chemical reaction?
The total mass of the products formed is equal to the total mass of the reactants.
What is the Law of conservation of mass?
No new atoms are ever created or destroyed in a chemical reaction.
What can cause an apparent loss or gain in mass during reactions involving gases in open containers?
Gases may escape into the air or react with other substances.
What is a balanced symbol equation?
An equation where the number of each type of atom is the same on both sides.
What are state symbols and what do they represent?
State symbols provide extra information: (s) for solids, (l) for liquids, (g) for gases, and (aq) for aqueous solutions.
Write the word equation for the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen.
hydrogen + oxygen → water
Write the balanced symbol equation for the decomposition of calcium carbonate.
CaCO₃(s) → CaO(s) + CO₂(g)
How do you check if an equation is balanced?
By counting the number of each type of atom on either side of the equation.
What is the balanced symbol equation for hydrogen reacting with oxygen?
2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O
What is the balanced symbol equation for sodium reacting with water?
2Na + 2H₂O → 2NaOH + H₂(g)
What should you wear for safety during chemical experiments?
Wear chemical splash-proof eye protection.
What happens to the mass of calcium carbonate when heated?
It appears to lose mass due to carbon dioxide gas escaping.
What is the formula for lead nitrate?
Pb(NO₃)₂
What is the formula for potassium iodide?
KI
What is the precipitate formed from the reaction of lead nitrate and potassium iodide?
Lead iodide, PbI₂.
