2
Q

What is an unusual feature of carbon atoms?

A

they readily form bonds with other carbon atoms, creating a ‘carbon backbone’ to which other atoms can attach

16
Q

what is the general formula of monosaccharides?

A

(CH¬2O)n

n=3-7

17
Q

what are examples of monosaccharides?

A

glucose
galactose
fructose

18
Q

what type of sugar is glucose?

A

hexose (6 carbon) sugar

19
Q

what is the formula of glucose?

A

C6H12O6

20
Q

what are the isomers of glucose?

A

alpha glucose

beta glucose

21
Q

what is an isomer?

A

same molecular formula, different structural formulae

22
Q

what sugars are reducing sugars?

A

all monosaccharides

some disaccharides e.g. maltose

23
Q

what is the process of reduction?

A

a chemical reaction involving the gain of electrons or hydrogen

24
Q

what is a reducing sugar?

A

a sugar that can donate electrons to/reduce another chemical
chemical=e.g. benedicts reagent

25
Q

what is a test for reducing sugars?

A

benadicts test

26
Q

what is benedicts reagent?

A

an alkaline solution of copper (II) sulfate

27
Q

what if formed when benedicts reagent is heated with a reducing sugar?

A

an insoluble red precipitate for copper (I) oxide i formed

28
Q

what is the method for benedicts test?

A
  • add 2cm^3 of the food sample to be tested to a test tube, grind up in water if not in liquid form
  • add equal volume of Benedicts reagent
  • heat the mixture in a gently boiling water bath for 5 minutes, solution turns an orange-brown if reducing sugar present
