1.2 - Bonding Flashcards
What is the definition of an ion?
is a charged particle formed when an atom gains or loses electrons
What is the definition of a molecular ion?
is a charged particle containing more than one atom
What is the definition of Cation?
positive ion
What is the definition of Anion?
A negative ion
What is the definition of ionic bonding?
involves attraction between oppositely charged ions (typically in metals).
What is the definition of a single covalent bond?
a shared pair of electrons (typically occurs in non-metals)
What is the definition of a double covalent bond?
two shared pair of electrons (typically occurs in non-metals)
What is the definition of a triple covalent bond?
three shared pair of electrons (typically occurs in non-metals)
What is the definition of a lone pair?
a pair of electrons which do not take part in bonding
What is the definition of a molecule?
two or more atoms covalently bonded
When does metallic bonding occur?
metallic bonding results from the attraction between the positive ions in a regular lattice and the delocalised electrons.
What is metallic bonding?
The attraction between the positive metal ions and the sea of free moving (delocalised) electrons in a regular lattice.
Delocalised electrons are electrons are electrons that are free to move throughout the whole structure.
