1.2- biotic factors: the influence of living things Flashcards
biomass
dry mass of all the living organisms occupying a habitat
ecology
the study of the interaction of living organisms with one another and with their physical
population
a group of organisms, all the same species, that interbreed and live in the same area at the same time. ex: bison(what) - Elk island(where) - 2021(date) - 300(number)
biological community
interacting population living in a certain area at the same time
symbiosis
it means “living together” a long-lasting, ecological relationship that benefits at least one organism of 2 different species that live in close contact. ex: prairie dogs and bison in alberta
Mutualism ( type of symbiosis )
a symbiotic relationship in which the organism of both species benefits./ relationship between two different species that live in close contact.
“How do organisms benefit each other”
Commensalism ( type of symbiosis )
a form of symbiosis in which one organism benefits and the other organism is neither helped nor harmed
parasitism ( type of symbiosis )
a symbiotic relationship in which one organism called the parasite benefits at the expense of another organism, called the host.
competition
an interaction in which two or more organisms compete for the same limited resources
ecology
the study of the interaction between living organisms and between their interaction with their physical environment
