1.1 - water: an essential abiotic factor Flashcards
abiotic factor
living thing/factor
a living organism in the environment
abiotic factor
non living things/factor
non living things part of the environment
ecosystems
all the organism in an area as well as the abiotic factor with which they interact./a community of living organism that interact with each others
habitat
all biotic and abiotic factor present in an area that encourage the reproduction and survival of a particular organism./ natural environment where plants and animals lives and grows
algae
microscope, photosynthetic organism that play a vital role in marine and freshwater ecosystems./ small plants that can be found in water
harmful algal blooms ( eutrophication)
a rapid growth of algae that can deplete the oxygen dissolved in water and block the sunlight required by other organism in the aquatic ecosystem./ excessive growths of algae that can have a negative effect on the environment
nutrient
an element or compound an organism need for metabolism growth, or function./ a substance that is essential for the growth
why is water important
- require by all living things as they are composed of 70-95% water
- water is universal solvent( water is good at dissolving nutrients)
- water is “polar” ( allows it to be attracted to many chemical cause it have both positive and negative ions)
eutrophication steps
1) fertilizer from agriculture/farm
2) fertilizer finds it ways into nearby water. nitrates/nitrogen/phosphate
3) algae bloom (population growth)
4) algae die - decomposition - requires oxygen
5) limited oxygen for all other species
