1.2 Basic ideas about atoms (Emission and absorption spectra) Flashcards
what is the equation for light?
c = f$ (c is the speed of light)
( $ is wavelength)
what is the equation for electromagnetic radiation?
E = hf
( h is planks constant)
What spectrum contains a colourful background and black lines and what does it indicate?
The absorption spectra and the black lines indicate where light of of some wavelengths has been absorbed. The wavelengths of these lines correspond to the energy taken in by the atoms to promote electrons fro lower to higher energy levels.
What spectrum has a black background and colourful lines?
Emission spectra
the coloured lights indicate the photons that were released by atoms that were excited to higher energy levels and then dropped back down.
