1.2 Algebra - indicies and Powers & Standard Form Flashcards
What is Law I?
Multiplication of powers = to addition of powers with the same integer/letter
aXaY = aX+Y
what is law II?
division of power = to subtraction of powers with same integer/letter
aX/aY = aX-Y
what is law III?
Multiplication of powers
(aM)N = aMxN
what is law IV?
division of powers = to rooting of powers
aM/N = N√aM
what is law V?
minus powers = 1 over letter and positive power
a-M = 1/aM
what is standard form?
Decimal number multiplied by 10 to the power of… based on its original number.
(it can be a negative power)
ex. 0.0437 = 4.37 x 10 to power of -2
what is the mantissa?
the number that is written in standard form
ex. 4.37
what is the exponent?
is the factor by which the mantissa is multiplied by
10 to the power of 2
can mantissae be added or subtracted?
yes, providing that the exponent is the same.
can the mantissae be added or subtracted if the exponent is not the same?
yes, but you would need to added/subtract in decimal form
