1.2 Flashcards
matter
anything that occupies space and has mass
plasma
occurs in the interior of stars, gas made up of electrically charged particles that are also found in lightening and some televisions
mass
measure of the amount of matter measured within the force needed to accelerate an object
weight
force that gravity exerts on an object, directly proportional to an object’s mass
weight in relation to gravity
weight changes with gravity but mass does not
Law of Conservation of Matter
there is no detectable change in the total quantity of matter present when matter converts from one type to another (chemical change) or changes among solid, liquid, and gaseous state (physical change)
atom
smallest particle of an element, holds all properties of said element, can enter a chemical combination, if an atom is divided it is no longer classified as a part of the element it was prior to the split
molecule
two or more atoms joined by chemical bonds
pure substance
constant composition, elements and compounds, can be broken down by compounds to produce elements, other compounds, or both
