11.5 Oxides Flashcards
What are oxides
Oxides are compounds containing oxygen and another element
what are the basic oxides
-magnesium oxide (MgO)
-copper oxide (CuO)
-iron oxide (Fe2O3)
when magnesium reacts with oxygen what is the color of flame
leaving white ashes called Magnesium oxide
equation for magnesium ribbon burnt with oxygen
2Mg + O2 —> 2MgO
what will happen when iron wool burnt with oxygen
it glows bright orange and throw out a shower of sparks and black solid is left in the jar
equation for iron burn with oxygen
4Fe + 3O2 –>2Fe2O3
what happens when copper burns with oxygen
copper is too unreactive but when it is heated in the steam of gas it surface turns black,
the reaction with copper and oxygen
2Cu + O2 —> 2CuO
copper oxide reacts with hydrochloric acid
CuO + 2HCl —> CuCl2 + H2O
how to make a basic oxide
metal reacts with oxygen to form a basic oxide, those basic oxides are called bases, example sodium oxide, copper oxide and magnesium oxide.
how to make acidic oxides
in general non metal reacts with oxygen will make acidic oxide. Examples carbon reacts with oxygen and makes carbon dioxide
S + O2 –> SO2
2P + 5O2 –> P4O10
when carbon dioxide dissolves in water what will be the product
H2Co3
atmospheric oxide
that one substance/compound (species), especially a metal oxide or hydroxide) able to react both as a base and as an acid
example: Aluminum oxide Al2O3
Aluminum oxide with HCl reaction
Al2O3 + HCl —-> AlCl3 + H2O
aluminum reacts with sodium hydroxide
2Al+6NaOH——–>2Na3AlO3+3H2
