culture : the norm of intolerance

A

baldwin 2017 all cultures are ethnocentric to some extent. they believe their culture is superior, some are more prejudiced than others. In some cultures, the norm is to be more accepting of diversity and tolerant of differences they often prejudice and discrimination still exist in more subtle and secretive ways
eg benevolence intolerance = eg giving money to a homeless person but not wanting a homeless shelter to be built on your street

strengths: orpen 1917. Notes F scale scores were not significantly correlated with prejudice in a group of white South African participants. This suggests that conformity to cultural norms may be critical determinant of intolerant attitudes towards specific out groups
weakness: The problem with the evidence is that the participants were 16-year-old school children and young people have a strong desire to fit in with their social group
