11.4 Blood Pressure Flashcards
Blood Pressure
The first reading is called the systolic pressure, which reads the pressure where the heart contracts
A common reading is 120 mm hg (Pressure unit)
The second reading is called the diastolic pressure, which reads the pressure when the heart is relaxed
A common reading is 80 mm hg
Doctors read this as 120/80 or 120 over 80 which is healthy
Hypertension
Blood pressure consistently above normal is called hypertension or high blood pressure or silent killer
Caused by a variety of things such as, kidney disease (cause more fluid in the blood), some medications, age(vessels can’t stretch as well)
High sodium diets create high levels of sodium in the blood, requires more water to be diffused into the bloodstream
Don’t have more than 2300 mg of sodium per day.
Its considered the silent killer because symptoms don’t often show, then heart attacks and strokes can occur
Lymphatic system
Has 2 major roles
Maintain blood volume in circulatory system
Filter bacteria and other components from blood in the immune system
When blood circulates, some proteins and fluid leak into tissue, lowering the pressure
1. The excess is collected by lymph vessels and returned to the blood
2. The fluid is known as lymph
3. Without this the body would swell up.
Lymph
Lymph contains many things
Fluid itself
Bacteria
Foreign cells, dead or damaged cells
Fat molecules
In the system are sets of lymph nodes which is where leukocytes destroy viruses and bacteria in the lymph
When the nodes are swollen, it means your fighting a disease
The spleen is the largest organ in this system
Serves as a filtering station and a reservoir of leukocytes and erythrocytes
When needed the body takes from the reservoir
Thymus is a critical organ in the immune system, which secretes hormones to help lymphocytes (a type of leukocyte) to recognize and attack foreign invaders
