11.1 The need for a circulatory system Flashcards
Important functions for survival
Delivers oxygen from the respiratory system
Delivers nutrients from the digestive system
Delivers hormones from the endocrine system
Delivers chemicals from the immune system
Removes metabolic waste from cells to the kidneys and lungs
Distributes energy around the body
3 fundamental pieces of the circulatory system
Contain a fluid that transports materials through the body
Contain a network of tubes in which the fluid can circulate
Contain a pump that pushes the fluid through the tubes
2 types of circulatory systems
open and closed
Open circulatory system
Circulating fluid is pumped into an interconnected system of body cavities or sinuses, where it bathes the cells directly. (Grasshoppers)
Closed circulatory system
The fluid is contained in a network of tubes, or blood vessels, allowing for diffusion or materials in and out of the cells.
What controls the system
Heart that consists of 2 chambers
Atrium: chamber of the heart receiving blood from the body
Ventricle: Chamber of the heart pumping blood into the body.
The divide between these chambers into two cavities is defined as our septum.
The 2 circuits
Pulmonary and systemic
Pulmonary circuit
the part of the circulatory system that delivers blood to the lungs (Right side)
Systemic circuit
the part of the circulatory system that delivers blood around the body (Left side)
