1.1.4 Flashcards
What is the function of each blood component?
-Red blood cells ( erythrocytes) delivers oxygen to tissues, hemoglobin is an iron-rich molecule that can bind oxygen readily
-white blood cells (leukocytes) is a part of the body’s immune system, helps fight infections and other diseases
-Platelets (thrombocytes) is the Clusters together during an injury to act as a plug to prevent excess blood from leaving body, made in bone marrow
-plasma transports nutrients, hormones, and proteins to cells and removes waste, carries all other parts of the blood through circulatory system
What are the formal medical terms for a red blood cell, white blood cell, and platelet?
Red blood cells ( erythrocytes) , white blood cells (leukocytes), Platelets (thrombocytes)
What are the three types of presumptive blood tests? Which one did we use in class?
Icv, luminal, kastle-meyer ( one we used in class)
What does a positive presumptive blood test tell you?
that a sample might be blood ( hemoglobin is present)
What is a presumptive blood test testing for?
the iron present in hemoglobin
What is the confirmatory blood test that we did in class?
ABO blood type testing
Describe how a blood typing test works.
Blood is mixed with antibodies against A and B blood then the sample is checked for agglutination
What are the four possible blood types? Draw each to show what is on their outer surface.
A, B , AB , O (drawing is sent to the gc)
Know how to match agglutination results to blood type.
A: a: red b:dots
B: a: dots b:red
O: a: dots b:dots
AB: a: red b:red
What blood type is the universal donor, and why? -
o negative. because anyone can receive the red blood cells from their donations.
What blood type is the universal recipient, and why? -
ab positive. because it has both A and B antigens allowing it to accept blood from any type without an immune reaction.
Review the blood typing results for our crime scene and be able to identify whose blood it could be.
according to the blood testing results, it could’ve been ANNAs
Review your blood spatter experiment - what is the independent variable? Dependent variable? What trend did you see for the size of the blood droplet as height increases?
he independent variable was the height and the dependant variable was the size. As the height increased, so did the size
Know how to use a height determination graph to determine height if given a blood droplet size.
