1.1.3) Input, Output and Storage Devices Flashcards
What is an input device?
A physical component that allows interaction with a computer system by providing data and control signals to that system
What are some examples of input devices? (10)
- Paper Scanner
- PET Scanner
- Optical Character Recognition
- Optical Mark Recognition
- Barcode Scanner
- Heartbeat Sensors
- Alcohol Sensors
- Motion Sensors
- Radio frequency identification
- Digital cameras
What is a paper scanner?
A machine that takes and converts scans of sources like paper, posters, books etc.
What is a PET Scanner?
Positon emmision tomography- a 3D scanner which creates detailed displays of a body and uploads it to 3D imaging software
What is Optical Character Recognition?
A program that extracts and repurposes data from sources like scanned images, text documents and image only pdfs. Often used for translationm data entry, licence plate recognition.
What is optical mark recognition?
A technology that extracts useful data from marked fields such as fill in fields and checkboxes very quickly and with great accuracy.
What is a Barcode scanner?
A scanning device which contains a scanner, decoder and wire. It uses the width of barcode lines to identify products/items.
What is a heartbeat sensor?
Measures pulse waves to track heartrate/pulse strength
What is an Alcohol sensor?
A sensor that detects ethanol in the air.
What is a motion sensor?
An electronic device designed to detect and measure movement.
What is RFID?
Radio frequency identification- a form of communication that uses radio waves to identify tags, often used in livestock tracking and credit cards.
What is a digital camera?
An electronic device that registers the intensity and colour of light and converts this into pixel data.
What is an Output device?
A device which takes processed data and turns it into a form that can be understood by humans.
Types of Output devices: (13)
- LCD Screen
- Projector Screen
- Interactive whiteboard
- Laser printer
- Ink Jet printer
- Plotter
- 3D printer
- Laser Cutter
- Internal Speaker
- External speaker
- Buzzer
- Linear Actuator
- Rotary Actuator
What is an LCD screen?
Screens lit by a backlight using liquid crystals to rotate polarized light.
What is a projector?
An optical device that projects an image onto a survace by shining light through a lens
What is a projector interactive whiteboard?
A camera calibrates movements of the user and allows user to interact with projection.
What are the two types of interactive whiteboards?
Projector interactive whiteboards and Touch Screen interactive whiteboards.
What is a touch screen interactive whiteboard?
A monitor where you can interact with the content displayed on the monitor.
What is a laser printer?
A printer that uses a laser to attach toner to a piece of paper.
What is an inkjet printer?
A printer that uses ink to create images or text.
What is a plotter?
A printer that creates line drawings on paper, it is highly accurate.
What is a 3D printer?
A printer that creates 3D objects by depositing materials layer by layer.
What is a laser cutter?
A machine that uses a heat laser to cut a shape into wood.
What is an internal speaker?
A speaker inside of another device (eg a laptop)
What is an external speaker?
A device that can only amplify sound- not built into another device.
What is a buzzer?
A type of speaker that only oscillates, creating a buzzing sound.
What factors should be considered when recommending a device to a user?
- User Needs
- User Skills
- Environment
- Cost
What are the three types of storage devices?
- Magnetic
- Optical
- Flash
What is a magnetic storage device?
A storage device that stores information by magnetising particles on a disk or tape
Advantages of a Magnetic storage device?
- High storage capacity
- Cheap
- Suitable for long term storage and backup
Disadvantages of a Magnetic storage device?
- Slow
- Not robust
- Can degrade in quality over time
What is optical storage?
Storage that stores data using a laser, with pits and troughs representing binary values.
Advantages of an Optical storage device?
- Durable
- Portable
- Suitable for media distribution
Disadvantages of a Magnetic storage device?
- Low capacity
- Slow
- Not Robust
What is a flash storage device?
A storage device that stores data in flash memory cells
Advantages of a Flash storage device?
- Fast
- Robust
- Easy
- Silent
Advantages of a Flash storage device?
- Expensive
- Cells can wear out when rewritten
What are 4 examples of Storage devices?
- Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
- Solid state drive (SSD)
- USB Flash Drive
- CD/DVD/Bluray disc
What factors should be considered when recommending a Storage device?
- Capacity needs
- Performance needs (Speed)
- Portability
- Cost
What is RAM?
Volatile memory that can be written to or read from, storing programs and data currently being used
What is ROM?
Non Volatile memory, that is read only, holding permanent information such as the bootstrap.
What is virtual storage?
A model of data storage where digital data is stored across multiple servers and locations.
Why do we need virtual storage?
Due to the amount of data increasing, physical/local devices can be impractical.
How does virtual storage work?
Data is transmitted over the internet to a data centre, maintained by the provider.
Advantages of Virtual storage?
- Scalable
- Accessible
- Protected from hardware failure
- Cheap
Disadvantages of virtual storage?
- Dependant on internet connection
- Sometimes not secure
- Ongoing costs
