1.1.2 The water cycle: Changes over time Flashcards
Natural processes
Seasonal changes, storm events, droughts, El nino and la nina (El Nino Southern Oscillation), cryospheric processes
El nino
Every 7 years = warm phase of surface waters
La nina
Every 7 years = cool phase of surface waters
Southern oscillation
= atmospheric changes
ENSO
moves with season. Affects ocean temperatures and currents
Cryospheric processes
69% of freshwater in glaciers and ice caps through process of accumulation. Currently almost all are melting causing rising sea levels.
Human impacts
Farming practices, land use changes (deforestation & urbanisation), Watre abstraction
Water abstraction
Decreases surface storage
Increases during dry seasons.
Over abstraction of aquifers leads to decrease of global water stores.
