What does Genesis 1 say?
God created the universe in 6 days
Everything God made was God
What do Genesis 2 and 3 say?
God created Adam after creating the heavens and the earth
Adam was lonely so he created the animals
That didn’t work so he created Eve
They lived in Eden until they disobeyed God and were sent out into the world
What do literal christians believe?
The Bible is the literal word of God and Genesis 1 and 2 are scientific truth
They don’t believe in evolution or the big bang
What do conservative christians believe?
The Bible is the word of God, but not his actual word.
Genesis 1 and 2 are poetic explanations of Genesis 1
They believe in the big bang and evolution
What do liberal christians believe?
The Bible is book of words about God but not his words
Genesis 1 and 2 had different authors and metaphors about creation rather than fact
Why are these beliefs important to christians?
The world is good
God created humans in his image - so they have free will and self-knowledge
God gave people human dignity and stewardship
How well they act as a steward will determine how they are judged by God after death
